i have been trying jlabels number rows on jpanel couple days no joy. have tried every layout manager can think of. have best results (which aren't want) gridlayout. please help!

the problem have trying fight difference in font metrics between different systems, typically make labels different. layout manager, difficult single unit of work, instead...

create custom jpanel sole responsibility draw single row of dots. add jlabel , row using gridlayout or gridbaglayout

draw row numbers directly onto panel dots using graphics#drawstring
